LTA Tennis Journey

Frequently Asked Questions - Tennis

I am thinking of starting my tennis coaching journey, where do I begin?

The entry pathway into tennis coaching is the LTA Tennis Assistant (Level 1) course, this two-day qualification is ideal for those looking to support group coaching sessions, alongside a lead coach. You will need to be 16 or over to complete this course.

Candidates wanting to progress to the LTA Instructor course must have completed an LTA readiness test (unless exempt due to WTN/historic rating), and you must have an enhanced DBS Check completed by the LTA or verified through the update service.

No. You do not need a first aid certificate to sign up for or start the course. You will however need to hold a first aid certificate to complete the summative. This means that either during, or after your course, you should book on to a valid first aid course, this will enable you to complete your summative assessment and later, practice as a competent coach.

The summative assessment is an evaluation at the end of your training to measure your skill and understanding against set standards. This is done through a practical, video-recorded coaching session submitted directly to the LTA and graded by an assessor. Your course tutor will help you plan for this.

Great, well done! The best thing you can do now is gain some experience on court, using the skills you have developed along the way. You must also become LTA accredited, which ensures you are safe to deliver.

Once you’ve gained some experience you can move forward to complete the LTA Coach (Level 3) course, this is a more in-depth course for those wanting to teach individuals and upgrade their coaching. You will have to complete the Coach readiness test (unless exempt) and ensure that your LTA Enhanced DBS check is up to date.
